August 31, 2009 - ROCKFORD – The Rockford Thunder announced today via a press release that the six-year franchise has been put up for sale and is looking for a buyer effective immediately.
"It comes with a very heavy heart and at a time of positives that our family has decided to put our women's professional fastpitch team up for sale,” stated team owner and local attorney Robert D. Lowe.
The Thunder is one of the original teams in National Pro Fastpitch and began play during the 2003 season. They played the first three seasons in Houston, Texas and operated as the Texas Thunder. Prior to the 2006 season, Lowe purchased the team and operated the team one season in Texas before relocating the franchise to its current home in Northern Illinois.
"Next year we will have three kids in college and we just have too much on our plate to continue to operate the Thunder at the level it deserves,” said Lowe. “With the other businesses we own it is just becoming too much for one family.”
“The team had its best year in 2009 and we couldn’t be happier with it ending with a much-deserved title for the girls. But we feel now is the right time for a new owner. I want to thank all the great fans, the hard work of general manager Aaron M. Moore, Assistant Dave Desanti, the entire staff and players and so many other individuals. We would also like to thank the Village of Roscoe and the group at Stateline Youth Athletics for everything they’ve done to bring the Thunder where they are today.”
Rockford played its first two seasons in town at Sportscore One before moving to its current home in Roscoe for the 2009 season. In its three seasons as the Rockford Thunder they have played in two championship games and won its first Cowles Cup in 2009.
